The board game scene is heating up after a major crowdfunding merger

The tabletop crowdfunding site Gamefound has spent years building a following to directly compete with the industry leader Kickstarter. Those efforts got a big boost today, as the Wroclaw, Poland-based company announced it has acquired the tech-focused crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

“Our success comes from a simple philosophy: build a platform at least twice as good as the next competitor, and then dedication, hard work and focus from our team to make it happen,” Gamefound CEO Marcin Świerkot said in a statement. “Now, we’re bringing this philosophy to Indiegogo, combining Gamefound’s technology with Indiegogo’s incredible reach to revolutionize crowdfunding for every category.”

Indiegogo has 38 million members and has raised almost $3 billion since it was founded in 2008. Gamefound will combine that audience with its technology, which includes a mobile app, multilingual support, more payment methods, and a pledge management system that makes it easy to make changes to an order after a crowdfunding campaign ends. Gamefound has also promised to make Indiegogo’s pricing and terms more friendly to creators.

“It’s time for crowdfunding to be a forward-facing industry again,” Indiegogo CEO Julie dePontbriand said in a statement. “Gamefound’s technology is unrivaled on the market, and we are thrilled to bring it to Indiegogo’s diverse community of creators. Together, we’re making crowdfunding more innovative, creator-friendly, and exciting than ever before.”

Gamefound has grown rapidly, raising more than $165 million in 2024 and hosting the majority of the year’s biggest board gaming campaigns. Part of its success has involved partnering with well established tabletop creators with built-in audiences. Top campaigns have included Nemesis: Retaliation, the third game in Awaken Realms’ semi-cooperative sci–fi horror series, and Go On Board’s Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game.
